Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Provider (PMHNP) serves as a key provider in the outpatient tribal health clinic, delivering psychiatric care through in-person and telemedicine services. The PMHNP manages a patient caseload and collaborates closely with an interdisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive, culturally responsive care. This role supports both behavioral and integrated healthcare efforts within the clinic.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtains and documents relevant to psychiatric and medical history.
  • Formulates the appropriate differential diagnosis based on the history, psychiatric examination, and clinical findings.
  • Establishes a plan of care to achieve identified health goals.
  • Prescribes psychotropic medications and collaborates with the behavioral health team to facilitate appropriate medication monitoring and adherence.
  • Provides patient education through handouts and discussion of patient concerns during office visits. Instructs patient/family regarding medication and treatment directions.
  • Responds to medication refill requests, and patient/authorized caregiver questions outside of office visits with the support of medical or behavioral health assistants.
  • Assesses and intervenes for urgent and/or emergent mental health problems.
  • Attends various staff meetings.
  • Participates in quality assurance/improvement projects.
  • Completes all required documentation accurately, timely and thoroughly in accordance with department standards and to comply with electronic medical record requirements, including medication reconciliation, finalizing notes, clearing out clinical tasks, and participating in clinic task pool as needed.
  • Meets clinic site and organizational needs in a reliable and flexible manner; prioritizes work and makes an effort to adhere to schedule.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA regulations.
  • Demonstrates respect and sensitivity to cultural/social differences in interactions with others.
  • Demonstrates initiative and problem-solving skill, using sound judgement.
  • Maintains behavioral standards, including (but not limited to), effective listening and communication skills and respectful interactions with colleagues and patients.
  • Maintains licensure and certification necessary to provide their spectrum of clinical care.
  • Promotes a Culture of Safety, reporting hazards, errors and potential patient safety issues.
  • Seeks peer consultation during scheduled meetings or as needed when managing a medical or mental health condition that is not resolving as anticipated, feels adjustments in medication/therapy have not brought about the expected improvements, or any time the nurse practitioner seeks additional expertise on providing appropriate treatment for a specific condition.
  • Electronic progress notes adhere with clinic policies and procedures and are sufficiently detailed to obtain a clear picture of the patient's current health status.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS:

  • No supervisory responsibility or decision-making authority.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires working under stress in emergency situations and irregular hours.

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT:

  • Combination of exam rooms and medical offices.
  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Master’s or Doctorate Degree in Nursing with a focus on Psychiatric Nursing.
  • Completion of a state-accredited advanced practice program with a specialization in psychiatry/mental health.
  • Three (3) years of experience functioning as a licensed psychiatric provider in clinical settings.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on clinical experience delivering direct care to individuals with psychiatric disorders.
  • Proven ability to provide psychiatric care across diverse age groups, including both children/youth and adults.
  • Prior experience delivering psychiatric services via telemedicine platforms.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, verbally, in writing or by other acceptable means.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.

Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.
