Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Education Outreach Advocate is responsible for promoting K-12 student success and fostering engagement among students, parents/guardians, and the broader community. This limited duration position, funded by a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant through September 30, 2028, focuses on ensuring that Native families are informed, empowered, and supported in accessing educational and community resources essential to their success.

 

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partners with schools, staff, and leadership to develop, coordinate, and implement initiatives that strengthen student/school partnerships and outreach efforts.
  • Serves as a liaison between schools, parents/guardians, and community organizations to share information and gather feedback on school related matters.
  • Plans and facilitates parent/guardian and community engagement activities, including advisory meetings, social events, and mentoring programs.
  • Analyzes engagement data to evaluate and improve family and community involvement initiatives.
  • Researches and identifies best practices in engagement strategies and shares insight with colleagues.
  • Secures financial or collaborative support from businesses and community partners to enhance engagement activities.
  • Promotes student and parent/guardian participation in school activities through clear and effective communication.
  • Assists in addressing student concerns in collaboration with school staff.
  • Integrates culturally responsive health education and prevention strategies into outreach activities, ensuring families are aware of resources addressing common health issues affecting Native American populations.
  • Collaborates with Tribal Health and Human Services staff and external partners to address barriers related to common health concerns among Native American populations, supporting holistic student access.
  • Participates in and coordinates meetings with facilitators, agencies, and community partners.
  • Adheres to all safety standards and organizational policies.
  • Collaborates efficiently and effectively while consistently demonstrating professionalism and maintaining positive, respectful relationships with internal teams, external partners, and Tribal members.
  • Other duties as directed by management.

 

LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS:

  • This position requires working independently without overseeing others, with minimal authority in decision-making.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to manage moderate levels of stress arising from schedules, workload, etc.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work may occur in both outdoor and office environments and may require navigating various conditions, including inclement weather, at different times of day or week.
  • Moderate noise level with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Position may involve occasional irregular schedules to accommodate tides, seasonal cycles, special events, evening or weekend meetings, and out of area travel for conferences, workshops or training.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 25 years of age or older per our vehicle use policy.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to be insured to drive Tribal Government vehicles.
  • Experience working with Tribal communities, including knowledge of common health issues affecting Native American populations.
  • Experience mentoring or working directly with youth, with the ability to engage and support their development.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain positive relationships with youth, families, and the broader community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, adaptable for diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to complete First Aid/CPR training and obtain a Food Handler’s Card as arranged by the Tribe.
  • Demonstrated professionalism in all interactions and communications.
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of Microsoft products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, verbally, in writing or by other acceptable means.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting.
