Job Description:

 

SUMMARY

The Accounting Specialist II is responsible for daily, monthly and annual accounting, reconciliation duties, receivable and capital assets functions. This position assists the department with various tasks and is under the direct supervision of the Controller.

 

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reconciles all Tribal bank accounts monthly; monitoring daily activity and ensuring accurate posting of grant and contract revenues.
  • Records all deposits, including checks, ACH, and wire transfers into the MIP accounting system; processing regular bank deposits.
  • Reconciles departmental revenues (e.g. Health, Pharmacy, Dental) with bank activity.
  • Processes and reconciles Housing credit card and cash receipts; prepares monthly fund transfer.
  • Maintains and updates monthly Bank Account Balance and Investment/Endowment reports.
  • Tracks and enters capital assets into the FAS Gov Asset System; verifies classification and posts monthly depreciation.
  • Manages Tribal property systems and coordinates biannual inventories.
  • Prepares and sends monthly invoices to internal departments and external vendors; following up on outstanding payments.
  • Supports payroll processing and reconciliations, including FSA and loan payments; assisting with Tribal Council pay.
  • Addresses IRS issues related to SSNs/EINs and ensures compliance with confidentiality standards.
  • Assists with annual audit preparation and other finance-related tasks.
  • Collaborates efficiently and effectively while consistently demonstrating professionalism and maintaining positive, respectful relationships with internal teams, external partners, and Tribal members.
  • Other duties as directed by management.

 

LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS

  • This position requires working independently without overseeing others, with no authority in decision-making.

 

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit and type for long periods of time.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • Moderate noise level with frequent interruptions and distractions.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 25 years of age or older per our vehicle use policy.
  • Associate Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Two (2) years of hands-on accounting experience.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of 10 Key by touch.
  • Possession of good math skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to be insured to drive Tribal Government vehicles.
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of Microsoft products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, verbally, in writing or by other acceptable means.
  • This position will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.
