Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Dental Health Aide Therapist (DHAT) Preceptee is responsible for providing clinical dental services within an approved scope of practice under the direct supervision of a dentist, aligned with CTCLUSI Dental Program priorities. They support outreach, prevent, and dental education efforts at the clinic and collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary dental care team provider to deliver coordinated patient care.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides dental treatment and prevention services under the direct supervision of a dentist.
  • Identifies and recognizes signs of gum disease and other oral health conditions.
  • Educates patients on their oral health status and provides guidance on treatment options and preventative care.
  • Manages patient treatment time efficiently and collaborates effectively with all members of the dental care team.
  • Works closely with dentists and dental hygienists to plan, implement, and evaluate clinical services, including dental disease prevention programs.
  • Provides dental services to patients of all ages.
  • Delivers outreach services to schools and community sites within the Oregon five-county service area (Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane and Lincoln counties).
  • Participates in Tribal and Community events to promote oral health education and disease prevention.
  • Collaborates efficiently and effectively while consistently demonstrating professionalism and maintaining positive, respectful relationships with internal teams, external partners, and Tribal members.
  • Other duties as directed by management.

LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS

  • This position requires working independently without overseeing others, with minimal to no authority in decision-making.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • May require working occasional nights and/or weekends.
  • Moderate noise level with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Regular exposure to body fluids, laboratory &/or industrial chemicals depending on work location where personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel both locally and within the CTCLUSI service delivery area.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 25 years of age or older per our vehicle use policy.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion from the Alaska Dental Therapy Educational Program or a Commission on Dental Accreditation accredited program for Dental Therapy.
  • Dental Health Aide Therapist Certification from an appropriate credentialing agency or organization required within one (1) year of starting employment.
  • CPR certification on or within 90 days of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to be insured to drive Tribal Government vehicles.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, verbally, in writing or by other acceptable means.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.
