Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Accounting Specialist I provides accounting support across multiple programs, requiring strong attention to detail and accuracy while ensuring compliance with Tribal Code, departmental policies and procedures, and applicable federal laws within the Finance Department.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides backup support to Accounting Specialist 2 with processing cash receipts, receipt writings and journal entries while ensuring accuracy, proper coding and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Provides backup support to payroll functions, including assisting with payroll processing bi-weekly and bi-monthly, and manual check processing, as required.
  • Processes assigned payroll benefit accounts following Finance internal controls.
  • Assists Accounts Payable with 1099-year end processes and monthly researching of missing invoices/receipts and resolving discrepancies.
  • Acts as an alternate requestor for purchasing by processing purchase orders and check requests, as needed.
  • Assists the CFO, Controller and Assistant Controller with year-end clean up, account reconciliations and necessary code corrections to maintain accurate financial records and other duties as assigned.
  • Processes monthly interfund loan payments.
  • Supports the annual audit process by preparing documentation and responding to audit requests.
  • Responsible for daily bank runs.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality related to payroll, accounts payable, and other sensitive financial information.
  • Utilizes and navigates multiple accounting and organizational systems, including MIP, Laserfische, Microix, Paylocity, Amplifund, and other systems as implemented.
  • Other duties as directed by management.

LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS

  • This position requires working independently without overseeing others, with no authority in decision-making.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit and type for long periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to manage moderate levels of stress arising from schedules, workload, diverse or adversarial stakeholders, etc.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 25 years of age or older per our vehicle use policy.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to be insured to drive Tribal Government vehicles.
  • Associate degree in Accounting, Business Management, or a related field preferred.
  • General accounting or bookkeeping experience preferred.
  • Proficient in keyboarding with the ability to work efficiently and accurately.
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of Microsoft products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc).
  • Strong mathematical and numerical skills
  • Willingness to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training for NIMS certification as arranged by the Tribes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, verbally, in writing or by other acceptable means.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which will include fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.
